Kia’s all-electric PV5 Cargo achieves 693km on a single charge – a new global record for electric light commercial vans
Kia has made history with its new PV5 Cargo electric van, setting an official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the greatest distance travelled by a battery-powered light-duty van with maximum payload on a single charge - an incredible 693.38 kilometres (430.84 miles).
This remarkable achievement showcases Kia’s innovation in the electric van market and reinforces its growing reputation as a leader in sustainable mobility - now arriving soon to customers in Northern Ireland through Shelbourne Motors Kia.
Setting a new global benchmark
The record-breaking run was completed using a Kia PV5 Cargo Long Range 4-door, powered by a 71.2kWh battery and loaded to its maximum authorised payload of 665kg. Conducted on public roads north of Frankfurt, Germany, the test replicated real-world driving conditions including urban traffic, inclines, and delivery-style stop-start journeys - highlighting the PV5’s efficiency, practicality, and everyday usability for local businesses.
Marc Hedrich, President and CEO of Kia Europe, commented:
“Even if Kia is new to the LCV market, this record is a testament to the versatility and innovation behind Kia’s first PBV. The PV5 proves we are serious contenders, offering exceptional range, efficiency, and intelligent connectivity for today’s business drivers.”
Built for business and beyond
The Kia PV5 is the first model in Kia’s new Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) line-up - a range of modular, purpose-built vehicles designed to transform how companies move goods and people. The PV5 Cargo combines intelligent design, connected technology, and flexibility to meet the growing needs of businesses, trades, and fleets across Northern Ireland.
With up to 4.4 cubic metres of cargo space and a payload capacity of up to 790kg, the PV5 Cargo offers impressive practicality for delivery, service, and commercial use. Multiple configurations – including Cargo, Passenger, Chassis Cab, and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle variants – will ensure adaptability for every sector.
Battery choices range from 51.5kWh to 71.2kWh, with a fast-charging time of just 30 minutes (10–80%), helping drivers stay on the move.
Real-world record drive
Behind the wheel of the record-breaking PV5 were George Barrow, a respected van journalist and International Van of the Year juror, and Christopher Nigemeier, a senior engineer at Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center. The drive was independently verified by TÜV Hessen and buck Vermessung, ensuring full compliance with GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ standards.
Barrow reflected: “Driving the Kia PV5 was an incredible experience - achieving more than 430 miles with a full payload on a single charge is no small feat. This electric van truly raises the bar for what businesses can expect from zero-emission commercial vehicles.”
Driving innovation for Northern Ireland businesses
As part of Kia’s bold electrification strategy, the PV5 forms a key part of its mission to provide sustainable transport solutions for businesses and individuals alike. The record demonstrates how electric vans can offer both performance and reliability with running costs and environmental benefits that make them ideal for Northern Ireland’s commercial operators.
The record-breaking Kia PV5 Cargo will make its official public debut at the Solutrans Tradeshow in Lyon this November. Local customers can register their interest and stay informed about Kia electric vans in Northern Ireland via Shelbourne Motors Kia, official Kia dealer for Portadown and Newry.
