The Kia Niro has grown from its predecessor — a whole 65mm longer and 20mm wider — which certainly benefits the car’s interior space. The back seats are spoiled for space which doesn’t come as a detriment to the boot. The Kia Niro HEV has a really good-sized boot, with 451 litres of space available. The PHEV loses out some space to the battery back but still checks in at a big enough 358 litres.
In the rear there’s a generous amount of foot space under the front seats and if you’re blessed with sitting in the middle, the hump on the floor is small and won’t get in the way too much. Storage upfront includes decent sized door pockets, two cupholders in the centre console, and a storage cubby under the central arm. Rear-seat passengers get two cupholders on the fold-down centre armrest and a small storage area on the door for a drinks bottle.
When it comes to running costs, the Kia Niro HEV gets a combined WLTP fuel economy of around 61mpg and CO2 emissions of around 105g/km. You’ll see 45-50mpg without trying too hard, and upwards of 50mpg in situations where you can run on electric power frequently. The Niro PHEV manages combined WLTP fuel economy of 353mpg.
A used Niro Hybrid runs on a 139bhp 1.6 litre petrol engine and an electric motor. The Niro comes only as front-wheel drive with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission as standard. The plug-in-hybrid powertrain injects a little more power to electric motor for a combined 180bhp. The plug-in hybrid then offers perkier acceleration, reaching 60 mph in 7.3 seconds while the standard hybrid will get to 60 mph in a not so slow 8.9 seconds.
The plug-in-hybrid option is fitted with an 11.1-kWh battery pack that bring you around 33 miles of electric driving range per charge. When connected to a Level 2 charger, the battery can be refilled in less than three hours.
The chiselled interior creates a contemporary haven inside a used Kia Niro, making it one of the best-looking family SUV’s available today. There are soft, tactile materials gracing the areas you touch most frequently, and plenty of gloss-black and chrome details to lift the impression of quality. Kia has also used recycled materials and natural fibres like eucalyptus leaves for the headliner and upholstery.
The Niro gets Kia’s familiar 10.25-inch dial display and a 10.25-inch central infotainment screen that swoops nicely round the curved dash section. You also get a separate touch panel below the central screen to switch between audio and climate controls at the touch of a button. A creative way to save on physical buttons while still offering proper shortcuts. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity comes as standard across the range, as well as ambient interior lighting which lends an upscale touch, and a suite of safety features.
