Long before becoming household names, before the brand deals, and professional contracts, and the celebrity of it all, our favourite sports heroes started somewhere else. Their local grassroots club. They are the foundation of the entire sports ecosystem. Without them there is no talent pipeline, no coaches, no Ronaldo, no Messi, no Federer, Nadal or Djokovic, no Joe Root, Ben Stokes, no nobody. They are often run by passionate volunteers and sustained by communities which is exactly why Shelbourne Motors Toyota announced its sponsorship with Armagh Cricket Club. This is a group of dedicated people, bringing fun and development to the local community.
Through the Smash It programme we helped supply equipment like personalised bats and boost development for the coaches during the club’s Monday night Power Cricket – a summer Cricket camp for kids ages 4-11 years old. Walk into the club on a Monday night and you’ll come across more than a game. You’ll see parents volunteering, kids learning team work, different generations interacting and communities coming together. The air is electric with cheering, laughing, parents mingling, an experience reminding us of the importance of these types of sponsorships.
Harry Doyle, one of the youth coaches, commented: “Our association this year with the Smash It programme has been brilliant. We’ve been able to bring more volunteers in, been able to enable more coaching resources, and not only are the kids developing, the coaches are developing as well. The funding we have received we’ve been able to procure some more equipment which will help develop club Cricket here in Armagh. We’re very grateful for the support.”
Participants in the 6-week courses or holiday camps learn batting, bowling, and fielding under the guidance of trained Club Activators. Every child who registers for the programme receives an official Smash It playing kit, which typically includes a T-shirt, backpack, bat, and ball which they can bring home and continue practice even beyond Monday Power Cricket. We’re extremely proud to sponsor Armagh Cricket Club and help promote the amazing work they do bringing the sport to people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.
