The Qashqai’s spacious and well thought interior offers plenty of practical touches. Most drivers will find it easy to get comfortable up front and unless you’re pushing 6’5” or over you’ll be nice and snug. Front passengers get a set of large cupholders in the centre console as well as generous door pockets which will take big water bottles. Two different types of USB ports and a 12-volt plug point are provided ahead of the gear lever, and you can place personal items out of sight in the glovebox or the more generously proportioned central bin. There's also a wireless charging pad on most models, with a lip to keep your phone secure.
Heading back, the two comfortable outer seats will accommodate adults, while the centre seat one will be best fit for children or teenagers. Legroom is good, the rear doors open 85 degrees, and two scoops in the door pockets will take a pair of water bottles. The fold down central armrest incorporates some decent flimsy cupholders as well. Boot space comes in at an impressive 503 litres and extends to 1,539 litres with the rear seats folded down. You’ll get a real-world mpg in the low 40s.
The faint thrum of the e-Power Hybrid's three-cylinder engine injects a smooth helping of power that’s both brisk and pleasingly linear. Its 187bhp 1.5-litre petrol engine generates electricity and sends it to the electric motor that drives the wheels, for electric car-like instant acceleration (0-62mph takes 7.9 seconds).
Then you have the option of two 1.3 DIG-T petrol engines: the 138bhp DIG-T 140 and 156bhp DIG-T 158. The DIG-T 158 officially goes from 0-62mph in 9.5 seconds and the DIG-T 140 takes 10.1 seconds. The light steering and tight turning circle help when zooming around town and the suspension will happily soak up bumps, even on models fitted with the larger 20-inch wheels. The Qashqai is a relaxing and comfortable ride even on long journeys.
You’ll find yourself at ease and comfort when you climb into the Qashqai’s cabin. It features high end materials, attractive design and everything is easy to use. All Qashqai’s now come with a large, 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is big and clear. On base cars, the feature list is includes all you’ll need but upper trims have a full suite of Google-powered upgrades. The most important of these is built-in Google Maps - far superior to most built-in sat-navs in terms of accuracy, updates, and ease-of-use.
Pleasingly, Nissan has retained conventional buttons and rotary dials for the climate controls, which means adjusting the temperature or fan speed is a seamless process. Parking is made easier by the Qashqai’s upgraded Around View Monitor, which features a 3D function to see the car from above when parking. A feature called Invisible Hood View allows drivers to position the front wheels as if looking at them from behind, allowing you to see directly underneath the car when manoeuvring in tight car parks, for example.
You get manually adjustable lumbar support as standard, while N-Design, Tekna and Tekna+ models add full electric seat adjustment. The Tekna+ even has seat memory settings and a massage function. Plus, you get 64 tone ambient lighting that will even change with different drive modes.
