Why buy a new Nissan X-Trail?

Practicality & Running Costs

Family car buyers in Northern Ireland will be pleased to know there have been some big improvements to the Nissan X-Trail SUV, delivering more passenger space, better cabin quality and a more extensive list of standard safety features. It’s still as practical as ever, comfortable, and as easy to use for long trips as it is the every day commute. Items such as a centre armrest with two cup holders, luggage hooks and lighting in the boot, 60/40 split-folding rear seats and two rear ISOFIX points all add to the X-Trail’s ease of use.

Sticking to the X-Trail’s target audience of adventurous families, you’ll find a generous amount of storage space in the front, including two cupholders in the centre console, a large open space under the centre console, decent-sized door pockets and a deep storage area in the centre armrest. The doors open very wide - 85-degrees - and the seats are set high, making the X-Trail a good option for those who usually find it hard to get in and out of cars - or for those with car seats and young children.

Rear passengers benefit from lots of legroom and headroom. We also like how the centre seat in the X-Trail's middle bench folds down entirely to provide a huge armrest for rear passengers. If you decide to order your X-Trail with seven seats like our test car, only shorter people will feel comfortable in the back row. As for the boot, that entirely depends on spec. Mild-hybrid models get the most space with 585 litres, with e-Power dropping this to 575 litres. Want a seven-seater? That’ll drop boot space to 485 litres.

The 201bhp e-Power, front-wheel drive model offers the best fuel economy in the X-Trail range; up to 48.7mpg on the WLTP combined cycle, with CO2 emissions from 132g/km. Upgrade to the e-4ORCE four-wheel drive model and Nissan claims you should see fuel economy of around 44mpg with CO2 levels from 143g/km. The entry-level 161bhp mild-hybrid version is cheaper to buy, but the five-seater only manages an average of 39.8mpg, while specifying an extra two seats causes the fuel economy figure falls to 39.2mpg. CO2 emissions start from 161g/km.

Engine & Performance

Nissan says the car’s USP is that (if you spec the e-Power setup) it’s designed to drive like a proper EV, with just the e-motors in charge of powering the wheels. That's certainly the case. With the e-Power you certainly appreciate that the electric motors have the guts to get the car moving, not like certain hybrid rivals where the electric bit makes a cameo instead of taking up a starring role.

When driving you'll find yourself in a commanding driving position with full visibility of the road – and the corners of the car itself. It means the car is easier to manoeuvre than you’d expect in tight conditions – and it also means it’s well suited to motorway driving. Its straight-line performance is admirable, and you get an almost instantaneous boost from the hybrid part of the e4orce system – ideal for overtaking.

The X-Trail is perfectly comfortable out on the road, with the suspension only really troubled by the worst of Northern Ireland's pot-holed roads. Combined with clever traction control and an off-road mode, the X-Trail is able to keep going even with a wheel or two dangling in mid-air. Hill descent control skilfully tweaks the ABS to make steep downhills far less nerve-wracking than they should be, and it’s able to haul itself up a steep incline from a standstill even with the left-hand tyres on a surface even more slippery than loose dirt.

The quickest 210bhp e-4ORCE, all-wheel drive (five-seat) model able to cover 0-62mph in 7.0 seconds flat. Opting for seven seats means you’ll need a further two tenths of a second to reach the sprint benchmark. If you’re not fussed about having 4WD capability or seven seats, then the X-Trail 201bhp e-Power version is the one to go for. The mid-range car manages 0-62mph in 8.0 seconds, while the 161bhp mild-hybrid variant is the slowest option taking 9.6 seconds to reach 62mph.

Interior & Technology

This generation of X-Trail is certainly a big step on from the old, with a greater spread of soft-touch plastics, sharper digital displays and a classier feel all round. You can tell Nissan has made a bit of an effort with the inside of the X-Trail: it might even be a bit plusher than a workhorse family SUV should be, especially in the top tier trims. There are plenty of proper buttons up front like the separate climate control panel which is a real winner as rivals stick all of the controls in their screens, and the X-Trail even gets a manual dial for its drive modes.

In Acenta Premium specification, there’s an eight-inch touchscreen, plus wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and a six-speaker audio systems. If you go for N-Connecta trim and above, you're rewarded with a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen (like the one fitted to the car pictured), while top-of-the-range models add a 10.8-inch head-up display.

There is a lot of storage around the front of the cabin, we quite liked that. And USB-C plugs front and back even on the entry-level Acenta Premium trim, which the kids will appreciate. We liked the opening panoramic sunroof and integrated window blinds in the rear doors on the posher versions, too.

The X-Trail includes a raft of active safety systems that help to make journeys easier and less stressful. Using a camera mounted in the windscreen and a radar behind the Nissan badge in the front grille, the onboard technology includes automatic emergency braking, a forward collision warning, a lane-keep assist system, a blind-spot warning and traffic sign recognition.

Intelligent cruise control is also available and is capable of controlling acceleration and deceleration to automatically maintain a suitable following distance to the vehicle in front. Tekna and Tekna+ cars also include Nissan’s ProPilot driver assistance set-up.
