Family buyers in Northern Ireland will be impressed by the many practical features of the Nissan Qashqai. The rear doors swing up to a full 85-degress meaning that fitting a car seat - and putting a child into their seat - is made a lot easier. A reversible boot floor with an easy wipe-clean floor is another welcome addition when it comes to family hikes or sandy outings at the beach. Hop into the Nissan Qashqai's driver's seat and you'll find yourself sitting nice and high above the road with plenty of adjustment to find your preferred position. The steering wheel also has a reach and rake adjustment.
Storage around the cabin is decent with the main options being the small glovebox, slim door pockets, a deep cubby under the armrest, and a pair of cup holders in the centre console. There’s also a shelf for your phone that becomes a wireless charging pad in higher spec models.
If you're considering a new Nissan Qashqai, chances are you have a family and need a decent sized boot for push chairs, sports gear, shopping, and the laundry list of other things you use a boot for. The boot on the Qashqai measures 504 litres and grows to 1,600 litres when the rear seats are folded down. You also get a spilt boot floor which gives you underfloor storage for fragile items such as eggs, or if you want to hide any valuables. And the audio-heads among us who go for the 10-speaker Premium Bose sound system will find the subwoofer under the lowest floor panel.
Space in the rear seats is as you'd expect - substantial. You get two Isofix points, two USB-C charge ports, with leg and headroom enough for most people - unless your pushing 6ft 5", then you might feel a tad cramped.
Thanks to e-POWER technology, the New Nissan Qashqai's hybrid system aids its overall fuel economy, giving you a claimed 54mpg.
The 190hp 1.5-litre engine is by far the best one to have, but Nissan also offers slightly less powerful 140hp and 160hp versions, offering a claimed 44.8mpg, which drops to 40.9mpg on 4x4 models.
The faint thrum of the e-Power Hybrid's three-cylinder engine injects a smooth pulse of power that’s both brisk and pleasingly polished. Its 187bhp 1.5-litre petrol engine generates electricity and sends it to the electric motor that spins the wheels, for electric car-like instant acceleration (0-62mph takes 7.9 seconds).
Then you have the option of two 1.3 DIG-T petrol engines: the 138bhp DIG-T 140 and 156bhp DIG-T 158. The DIG-T 158 officially goes from 0-62mph in 9.5 seconds and the DIG-T 140 takes 10.1 seconds. The light steering and tight turning circle help when zipping around town and the suspension will happily soak up bumps, even on models fitted with the larger 20-inch wheels and even on the questionable Northern Ireland Roads. The Nissan Qashqai is a relaxing and comfortable ride even on long journeys.
To cope with the unpredictability of family life the cabin has combined comfort and robustness in equal measure. Virtues that help the Nissan Qashqai remain solid with an appealing ambience. You’ll find yourself at ease and comfort when you climb into the Qashqai’s cabin. It features high end materials, attractive design and everything is easy to use. You get swathes of Alcantara trim that serves well to break up the hard surfaces. It's complimented by a sleek new material finish around the dashboard and redesigned centre console.
All Nissan Qashqai’s now come with a large, 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is big and clear. On base cars, the feature list includes all you’ll need but upper trims have a full suite of Google-powered upgrades. The most important of these is built-in Google Maps - far superior to most built-in sat-navs in terms of accuracy, updates, and ease-of-use.
Pleasingly, Nissan has retained conventional buttons and rotary dials for the climate controls, which means adjusting the temperature or fan speed is a seamless process. Parking is made easier by the Qashqai’s upgraded Around View Monitor, which features a 3D function to see the car from above when parking. A feature called Invisible Hood View allows drivers to position the front wheels as if looking at them from behind, allowing you to see directly underneath the car when manoeuvring in tight car parks, for example.
