Pixo Perfect: Nissan Revive classic as modern EV city car

The Nissan Pixo is set to make a return as a small electric city car, sharing much of its technology with the new Renault Twingo. The latest collaboration between the two brands follows the Nissan Micra EV, which serves as Nissan’s counterpart to the popular Renault 5.

Nissan is due to unveil the new Pixo on 23 September. The teaser image released by the brand features dot-matrix-style graphics, hinting at a possible boxy design with an eighties-inspired feel. Nissan describes the new model as being “small in size, yet big in personality”, with a distinctive Nissan design. However, much like the new Dacia Spring, which also shares its underpinnings with the Twingo, some of the car’s key structural elements are expected to remain largely unchanged. These are likely to include the roofline, windows and wheelbase.

Nissan has confirmed that the Pixo will have around 80 per cent commonality with the Twingo, helping the new EV reach the market more quickly. As a result, it is expected to use the same 27.5kWh battery and 80bhp electric motor, potentially delivering a range of around 160 miles and a 0-62mph time of approximately 12 seconds. Charging is also likely to mirror the Twingo and Spring, with a maximum rate of 50kW allowing the battery to charge from 15 to 80 per cent in roughly 30 minutes.

With its official reveal coming towards the end of September, the Nissan Pixo is unlikely to reach UK showrooms until early 2027. Pricing is expected to start below £20,000, while eligibility for the Government’s Electric Car Grant could make the entry-level model even more affordable.

The Pixo will further expand Nissan’s UK electric vehicle line-up to four models, joining the Micra, Ariya and Leaf. An all-electric version of the Qashqai is reportedly no longer going ahead, although Nissan has confirmed that a bold new electric version of the smaller Juke SUV remains in development.
