Nissan is no stranger to pushing boundaries - and its latest performance-focused SUV proves just that. Recently unveiled for the Japanese market, the Nissan X-Trail NISMO is a bold new take on one of Nissan’s most popular SUVs, showing how far the brand is willing to go when it comes to innovation, design and driving dynamics.
While the X-Trail NISMO is not currently planned for the UK, it offers an exciting glimpse into where Nissan’s performance and electrified technology is heading.
A Performance-Inspired Take on a Family Favourite
The X-Trail NISMO is a sport-tuned version of Nissan’s e-POWER hybrid SUV, designed by Nissan’s performance division, NISMO (Nissan Motorsport). Instead of focusing on outright power, Nissan has concentrated on handling, balance and driver engagement - a smart move for a modern electrified SUV.
It uses the same advanced e-POWER hybrid system as the standard X-Trail, with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine acting as a generator for two electric motors. This delivers around 201 bhp and 525 Nm of torque, providing smooth, instant electric-style acceleration combined with excellent efficiency.
What makes the NISMO version special is how that power is delivered to the road.
Tuned for Sharper Handling and Greater Control
Nissan has given the X-Trail NISMO a number of mechanical upgrades designed to transform the way it drives:
NISMO-tuned e-4ORCE all-wheel drive sends more power to the rear wheels, giving the car a more balanced, responsive feel in corners
Kayaba Swing Valve shock absorbers (a first for Nissan) improve body control without sacrificing comfort
Wider, high-performance tyres provide greater grip and steering response
The result is an SUV that feels more connected, more confident and more engaging behind the wheel - without compromising everyday usability.
Bold NISMO Styling
The X-Trail NISMO also looks the part. Its sportier body kit features NISMO’s signature red accents, including a front splitter and rear diffuser that reduce aerodynamic lift by nearly 30%. Exclusive 20-inch Enkei alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres not only enhance its appearance but also improve cooling and grip.
Inside, the cabin receives a sporty makeover with:
- Black and red NISMO detailing
- A red engine start button
- A flat-bottom steering wheel
- Optional Recaro sports seats for extra support
It’s a space that feels purposeful, premium and performance-focused.
