Why buy a New Maxus eDELIVER 5?

Practicality & Running Costs

Despite its compact size - slotting between the eDELIVER 3 and eDELIVER 7 (yet not really belonging to the small or medium van category) - the Maxus eDeliver 5 promises impressive load-lugging capabilities, with Maxus promising 6.6m3 of load volume in our low-roof model. That’s a long way ahead of the 3.9m3 on offer in the VW ID Buzz Cargo – and the gap gets bigger if you opt for the eDeliver 5 High Roof, which has a 7.6m3 load area. To put that in perspective, that’s more than you’ll get in the back of a larger Ford E-Transit Custom or long-wheelbase Vauxhall Vivaro Electric. Lengthier loads can be accommodated by the 2,651mm long cargo area, which is almost 10cm longer than the E-Transit Custom’s load box and more than 30cm ahead of the Buzz Cargo.

The same holds true with payload limits. While the E-Transit Custom can carry 1,110kg of cargo – much more than the Buzz Cargo’s paltry 607kg – the eDeliver 5 beats them both with a 1,200kg figure. Even the heavier eDeliver 5 High Roof only gives away 20kg, still leaving it more accommodating than its rivals. Access to the load area is easy, with sliding doors on both sides of the van and rear barn doors that can be unclipped from their restraints to swing back 180 degrees.

The Maxus comes with just the one battery – a 64kWh unit. This results in an official 208 mile range. Maxus claims that it supports DC fast charging, although it doesn’t state what speed. It does say that it should take around 40 minutes to get from 10-80% of charge. A full 5-100% charge on a 7kW charger will take 7.5 hours.

Engine & Performance

The eDeliver 5 is gratifyingly simple to drive, although the start/stop button is small and hidden away low down and won’t be obvious to anyone jumping in the first time. Then there is just a stalk for changing into Drive or Reverse and off you go. There are three driving modes – Normal, Eco and Sport – that you can cycle through using a button on the wheel, but there isn’t a drastic difference between the three.

The steering is notable for being really quite sharp at all speeds, which is great around town as it allows for a bit more accuracy. Maxus has put a 64kWh battery pack under the floor of the eDeliver 5, which, according to WLTP test figures, is enough for 208 miles of motoring. The motor delivers 161bhp to the front wheels, with 177lb ft of torque to back that up. Performance, at least when empty, is more than sufficient, with the initial pick-up off the line enough to surprise a few hot hatch drivers.Brake regen on the highest setting is strong, almost giving the van a one-pedal driving mode. This recovers most power to the battery pack but can be a bit wearing, especially on motorways, so a simple button press on the steering wheel reduces the power to something more manageable.

It was pleasingly efficient during test drives, and didn’t take much work to have the predicted range showing well above the 208-mile target. Obviously that will change with a full load in the back.

Interior & Technology

If you're a stickler for having swathes of traditional buttons and switches you may have to change preferences as everything in the eDeliver 5 gets controlled by the 12.3" infotainment screen. Tat's right, even the heating and ventilation are lurking behind a digital menu, and with aircon rather than automatic climate control, you might need to go there reasonably frequently.

Happily, there’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you can plug your phone in and use whatever navigation and music streaming services you like. Ahead of the driver is a smaller digital instrument panel which, inexplicably, shows an image of a tuned eDeliver 5 that looks like it wouldn’t be out of place in the Fast and Furious movies. There’s a digital speedo, graphics to show what drive mode you’re in and how much brake regeneration you’re getting, and a few other bits of information.

Passengers get a two-seat bench, although the van is relatively narrow so they’ll need to be good friends. They’ll get plenty of knee room, as the eDeliver 5’s dashboard barely encroaches into the cab – there’s no gear lever, as the selector is steering-column mounted, and the handbrake is a digital switch. Storage is a little sparse, with no glovebox, but an overhead shelf and some nets on the doors hold a few things in place. Two cupholders are hidden in a fold-down panel low down on the dashboard. The cabin is made up mostly of hard durable plastics which are surprisingly still quite stylish.

The eDeliver 5 comes with a lengthy list of safety kit like:

  • Front and side airbags for driver and passenger
  • Rear parking sensors
  • 360-degree camera
  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane keep assist
  • Speed limit information
  • Automatic high-beam lights
